Hello Corgi lovers! This is my very first blog post, I thought it about time to put my fears aside and do this. While obviously we raise quality corgis here at Bear Creek Corgis I thought you might like to know a little more about us. This is actually a working cattle ranch where we strive to produce quality angus beef. Currently there are 4 generations that call the ranch home. While the corgis take up a good part of my time, the cattle do as well. This time of year things get very busy with the cows. Branding time is just wrapped up and shipping the cattle to summer pasture is under way. For those of you unfamiliar with this lifestyle, branding is our way of identifying our cattle from the neighbors cattle. In our little part of heaven here there are several different ranches that also run cattle so it is necessary to be able to tell them apart. Branding is a long standing tradition that brings neighbors together to help one another. The drought has made things very challenging the last several years. We do not use irrigation as a means to grow grass for the cattle but rely solely on rain. While things looked promising in December with an abundance of rainfall, January, February and March have been very dry. We are starting to see wells dry up again which means we will have to haul water to the cattle. Last year we were forced to cut the number of cows we run by 1/3 due to lack of feed while also buying hay at exorbitant prices. This life is not for the faint of heart but the benefit of getting raise our family on the land and our commitment to producing quality beef keeps us going and the corgis are a fun distraction. I hope you have enjoyed learning a little more about us.
